Cheap Security Cameras for Home Security Hidden or Not
When looking and installing a cheap security camera, or should we say a less expensive one, we can look at it from two approaches. One approach is to buy a fake security camera and try to fool someone into thinking it is real. If they think they are being watched they may not do whatever you are trying to prevent them from doing such as breaking into your home or in the case of an employee not robbing you blind or sleeping on the job. The second approach is to hide the camera in a place where the person or persons being watched can’t see it and then observe the person doing what they normally do.
Now either approach can be effective or ineffective. In the first instance, fake security cameras are easy to spot in many cases especially cheap security cameras. They are just not made out of the best material and once someone catches on to it being fake it becomes useless. In the second instance, a camera will be effective because the person will probably assume they are not being watched and will act as they would. The bad part is it’s almost impossible to hide a security camera in a space where someone may look for it. So it is up to the person placing a security camera to decide what approach to use. Below is an example of each approach. Click on the product links to find out more information about each camera.
The Everfocus ESD200/N-4 1/3″ Color Smoke Detector Camera uses the second approach. This video camera fits inside a fake smoke detector and keeps an eye on whatever you want it too. Just install the smoke detector and the camera is inside. I don’t think many people looking for a hidden camera would look insdie a smoke detector. This OUTDOOR FAKE / DUMMY SECURITY CAMERA w/ Blinking Light is a great but cheap security camera. It even has a blinking LED light to make it more realistic. Again the problem comes if it is ever found to be fake it becomes totally ineffective and the person who has installed it will never know. I think the second method is better. People don’t know there is a hidden camera and act as they always do, and if they find out there is one you will know because you have it on tape.
I’m pretty sold on the fake camera solution, but I’ve noticed that some of the cheaper models just look like plastic toys. Maybe getting a nice looking fake camera, and posting a “you are being watched” sign would be more effective?

Not hidden. As a matter of fact, one time we put the camera at the top of the front door. I loved it. It kept unwated people coming to the door that’s for sure!
Hi Amanda
Very good idea on putting it on the front door very obvious!
I agree too with putting unhidden cameras. It’s more intimidating and tends to drive away intruders. People get easily conscious if they know they’re being watched.
While I was reading it, I came across of getting one camera for our house. If there are cheap cameras out there then I will buy one for the safety of my family. If I have one, it should not be hidden. It should be place somewhere it can be seen.
I think it is much good if the camera can be seen if it is only to record daily activities but if someone is to monitor the surroundings, hiding the camera is the ideal thing to do.
